Should I Fast If I’m on Medication?

Are you on medication and wondering if fasting is still possible for you? Maybe you’re feeling torn between wanting to honor God through fasting and needing to take care of your health. Here’s the good news—you don’t have to choose one over the other.

In this post, we’re diving into what the Bible says about fasting, practical advice for those on medication, and a powerful truth about how you can still draw closer to God, no matter your situation. The answer might surprise you!

What is Biblical Fasting?

Let’s start by defining fasting from a biblical perspective. Fasting is abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose. It’s a way to humble ourselves, seek God, and prioritize Him over our physical needs.

We see examples of fasting throughout the Bible—Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness, and the early church fasted when they needed guidance and spiritual breakthroughs.

But I understand that fasting in the traditional sense might pose challenges if you’re taking medication. Whether it’s for a chronic condition or something temporary, your doctor may explain that food is necessary for your medication to work properly or to avoid side effects. So, what does that mean for fasting?

Your Health is Important to God

First, let’s establish something important: your health matters to God.

All the way back in the book of Exodus, the Lord revealed Himself to His people as “The Healer” of all sickness and disease. God doesn’t change—He’s still our healer today.

Also, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, ‘Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.’ Taking care of your body—whether through proper nutrition, medication, or rest—is part of honoring God.

So if you’re currently on medication, don’t let the enemy discourage you. Fasting isn’t about harming yourself; it’s about seeking God. And that’s something you can do in ways that align with your physical needs.

Medications and Fasting Considerations

Some medications require food to work effectively or to prevent side effects like nausea or dizziness. If that’s your situation, fasting in the traditional sense might not be the best option for you.

This is where wisdom comes in. Before attempting to fast while on medication, make sure you’re not putting your health at risk. God calls us to use wisdom in all things, and that includes how we approach fasting. Consulting your doctor is always a wise first step.

God’s Promises and Fasting

Here’s something encouraging—God promises benefits from fasting. Isaiah 58:8 says, ‘Your healing will spring up speedily.’

Fasting has both spiritual and physical benefits, but it’s important to approach it in a way that honors your health. Remember, God isn’t impressed by how much we sacrifice physically; He’s looking at the heart behind it. If you’re fasting with a sincere desire to grow closer to Him, He honors that—no matter the limitations you’re working with.

Practical Ways to Fast While on Medication

If you’re on medication, here are a few practical ways you can fast:

Consider a partial fast. Instead of a full fast, try fasting from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., or skip one meal a day.

Remove distractions. Set aside social media, TV, or other activities that take up your time and focus. Use that time to pray, read God’s Word, and seek His presence.

Choose intentional prayer times. Even if you’re not fasting food, dedicating extra time to prayer and the Word is key to spiritual growth.

And let me remind you—if fasting is completely impossible for you right now, you can still stay spiritually strong. Every believer should engage in daily prayer and Bible reading. That’s where real spiritual growth happens.

Even if you’re not fasting food, make sure you’re dedicating time each day to seek God. He cares far more about your relationship with Him than the specific method you use to get there.

Your Next Steps

So here’s my challenge to you: Pray and ask God how you can fast in a way that honors Him and your health. Maybe that’s one or two meals each day, or fasting distractions that pull you away from God. Whatever it is, remember that the heart behind the fast and faith in God is what matters most.
