Have you ever started fasting but found yourself giving up halfway through—wondering if you’re even doing it right? If so, you’re not alone.
Fasting is one of the most powerful spiritual tools we have as believers. However, when done incorrectly, it can feel frustrating and even pointless.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through 15 essential steps to fast effectively as a Christian. Whether you’re new to fasting or have tried before and struggled, by the end of this post, you’ll be equipped to fast with confidence and experience real spiritual breakthrough.
1. Understand the Purpose of Fasting
Fasting isn’t just about giving up food. It’s about drawing closer to God, seeking His direction, and dedicating yourself to Him.
Before you begin, ask yourself: Why am I fasting?
Never let fasting become just a religious exercise. Make sure your fast has a clear spiritual purpose. A dedicated fast brings spiritual benefits and keeps you grounded and focused.
2. Set a Specific Goal for Your Fast
Fasting without a goal is like driving without a destination.
Write down what you’re believing God for and be intentional during your fast. Philippians 4:6 reminds us to make our requests known to God. By writing down your goals, you can reflect on how God answers your prayers throughout the fast.
3. Choose the Type of Fast
There are different types of fasts in the Bible. Choose one that aligns with your faith level and physical capacity:
• Total Fast – No food or drink (recommended only for extreme situations).
• Liquid Fast – Abstaining from solid food while drinking liquids (the most common biblical fast).
• Intermittent Fast – Fasting part of the day (e.g., sunrise to sunset or 6 AM to 6 PM).
Note: I do not recommend the Daniel Fast for Christians, and I’ve made a video explaining why. You can find the link in the description.
4. Decide the Length of the Fast
Start with a manageable timeframe. If you’re a beginner, try fasting for 24 hours and build from there.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:16, “When you fast…” – notice it wasn’t “if.” Fasting is expected, but the length is up to you and your walk with God.
Set the duration beforehand to avoid giving up early. A fast with no defined end can easily be cut short.
5. Prepare Spiritually and Mentally
Before fasting, pray and ask God to reveal areas for repentance. Enter your fast with a clean heart and an expectant spirit.
Psalm 24:3-4 reminds us that those with “clean hands and a pure heart” can ascend the hill of the Lord.
6. Eliminate Distractions
Limit social media, TV, and unnecessary noise. Fasting isn’t just about food—it’s about replacing distractions with God’s presence.
In Genesis 32, Jacob had an encounter with God after sending his family and possessions away. When alone, God met with him. Remove distractions and make room for your personal encounter with the Lord.
7. Commit to Prayer and Bible Reading
Fasting without prayer is just dieting. Dedicate time to prayer and Scripture daily.
Matthew 4:4 says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Jesus declared this while fasting, emphasizing the importance of feeding your spirit with God’s Word.
Choose a Bible reading plan and stick to it. Listen to biblical preaching and teaching to strengthen your faith.
8. Write Down What God Shows You
Fasting quiets the flesh and allows us to hear God more clearly.
Habakkuk 2:2 says, “Write the vision; make it plain.”
Keep a journal during your fast. Write down what the Lord reveals to you in prayer.
9. Separate Yourself When Possible
Even Jesus withdrew to pray during fasting. Find time to be alone with God.
Matthew 6:17 encourages us to fast in humility, not for public recognition. If possible, separate yourself physically from normal routines and activities during this time of consecration.
10. Guard Your Heart and Attitude
Fast with humility, not to appear spiritual to others.
Matthew 6:16 warns us, “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do.”
Fasting isn’t about proving holiness—it’s about intimacy with God. Stay humble and focused.
11. Drink Water and Rest
Hydrate your body during fasting. Drink water and allow time for rest when needed.
1 Corinthians 6:19 reminds us, “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.” Care for it as you fast.
For extended fasts, consider supplements like electrolytes, multivitamins, or bone broth.
12. Break the Fast Wisely
Ease back into eating with light meals after your fast. Avoid overeating (trust me, I’ve made that mistake!).
If you fasted for more than a few days, reintroduce food gradually to prevent shocking your system.
13. Continue in Prayer After the Fast
Keep seeking God even after the fast ends. Maintain a consistent prayer life.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Pray without ceasing.” Let fasting fuel ongoing spiritual hunger.
14. Expect Resistance and Stay Strong
Hunger and distractions will come—expect it. Push through and stay committed.
James 4:7 tells us, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Fasting is spiritual warfare. Stay firm in your decision.
15. Trust God for Results
Even if you don’t see immediate results, trust that God is moving.
Galatians 6:9 encourages, “At the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Your fast is an act of faith. Trust that breakthrough is coming.
